Why Mindfulness for Athletes?

Mindfulness meditation enhances mental performance for athletes by improving focus, emotional regulation, and stress management. It trains the mind to remain present, helping athletes reduce distractions and react more effectively in high-pressure situations. This practice also increases self-awareness, allowing athletes to recognize and manage negative thoughts, nerves, or frustration, which leads to greater confidence and resilience. Additionally, mindfulness aids in recovery by promoting relaxation and reducing mental fatigue, enabling athletes to perform consistently at their best both physically and mentally.

“I can personally say working with Rafi changed my perspective on not only my sport, but everyday life. By being able to notice my thoughts, I can more easily continue working on the task at hand without getting caught up on those specific thoughts. Rafi taught me not to label those thoughts but rather to just notice them and then let them drift away. This ability allowed me to reach a higher athletic potential because I was able to take those thoughts, tweak them, and be grateful for what I was doing in the moment.”

Bobby Wallum - 8th Place - 2025 Master’s CrossFit Games (35-39 Division)

“Rafi has taught me not only how to meditate mindfully, but also how to be mindful when I play golf, cook, work out, or spend time with my family. He has shown me how to live a mindful life. One of my favorite mantras used to be “be where your feet are.” Now, I actually know how to live that. I can confidently say that I would not be where I am—externally and especially internally—without him.”

Grant Lester - SDSU D1 Men’s Golf & IVY League Rookie of the Year (24’-25’)

“As a competitive CrossFit athlete striving to reach the highest levels of the sport, I’ve seen a noticeable improvement in my physical performance, thanks in large part to my mental training. I’ve learned how to focus more effectively during workouts and competitions, how to manage pressure, and — most importantly — how to be present in the moment. This shift has not only elevated my performance but allowed me to experience more joy in the process.”

Dan Coda - 2nd Place Masters Fitness Championship (40-44 Division)

“I meditate every day. I do it in the mornings for about 10-15 minutes. It's like having an anchor. If I don't do it, it's like I'm constantly chasing the day.”

- Kobe Bryant
