The Curriculum

Dan Coda at the 2024 CrossFit Games

Training with precision draws from the Buddhist teaching, Wise Effort, part of the Eightfold Path—a guide to living with clarity, balance, and purpose.
Wise Effort isn’t about doing something “right,” but how you apply your energy—not just whether you “try hard,” but how you try.
Are you putting your energy toward what pulls you further into stress, comparison, and illusion?
-
Gentleness draws from the Buddhist heart practice of Metta — loving-kindness. Metta is the intention to relate to yourself and others with care, goodwill, and non- judgmental acceptance.
In a sport that often teaches us to be rigid and hard on ourselves, Metta offers a radical alternative:
Are you fueling your growth with fear and judgment?
Or with flexibility, curiosity, and care?
Real discipline doesn’t have to be harsh. You can be fully locked in and loose.
Focused and forgiving.
That’s the essence of training with gentleness.
-
Impermanence draws from the Buddhist teaching of Anicca — the truth that all things change.
In CrossFit, we often chase control, fixed pacing, perfect execution, and predictable outcomes. But the reality is, nothing in a workout stays the same.
Your breathing shifts. Your fatigue builds. Your plan adjusts in real time.
So the question becomes: Are you fighting what’s already changing? Or are you learning to move with it?
Embracing Impermanence isn’t quitting. It’s responding to what’s actually happening instead of clinging to what you wanted to happen.
You stay fully committed without being attached to the outcome.
-
Non-Attachment draws from the Buddhist teaching of Upādāna—the grasping or clinging that causes suffering..
In high-intensity training, we’re often conditioned to chase scores, compare ourselves to others, and try to control the outcome. But Non-Attachment offers a different approach:
Can you pursue your best performance without needing a guarantee?
Can you care deeply about the work without collapsing when things don’t go your way?Non-attachment invites you to stay fully committed... without clinging.
It teaches: Train with intention. Execute with discipline. Let go of the result.
Why mindset
is the rep
you're skipping.
The philosophy
Korby Foxall - ‘25 & ‘26 Open Division Semifinalist
Most athletes spend hours on mechanics, nutrition, and programming, and barely any time on the mental side of competition. But the difference between a PR and a miss is often nothing more than where your attention was.
This program draws from Buddhist teaching, elite sport psychology, and the specific demands of CrossFit to provide an integrative training system for conditioning “The Mindful Muscle.” Real practices. Real benchmarks. Real accountability.
“I can personally say working with Rafi changed my perspective on not only my sport, but everyday life.”
Bobby Wallum - '8th Place ‘25 CrossFit Games (35-39 Division)
